Port of Norrköping is gradually transitioning vehicles and cranes to electricity, with the goal of having approximately 70% of machinery powered by electricity by the year 2030. Already today, 90% of the cranes and several of the trucks are powered by green electricity. The shift to electricity presents the challenge of ensuring an adequate and continuous power supply, as operations need to remain stable and accessible around the clock, throughout the year.

“We are participating in various projects to enhance self-sufficiency, including energy storage initiatives to reduce our power peaks and a future solar panel installation. We are preparing to offer shore power to ships and implementing an expanded system of “battery swapping” to ensure that our machines always have charged batteries. In the Port of Norrköping, we have also replaced all mast lighting and all the lights in our facilities with LED lamps. Through these and other electricity-saving measures, we have, in just a few years, cut our energy consumption for properties within the company by half”, said Johan Flyxén, responsible for electrical installations and safety at Port of Norrköping.

As operations become more electrified, a new approach to safety is required.

“We are continuously working to raise awareness and knowledge about electrical safety within the company. We have, among other things, organized a training day for all employees focusing on electrical safety. The main goal is to increase knowledge and awareness so that employees know how to respond if something goes wrong”, Johan concluded.
