Port of Norrköping and Hitachi Energy take the next step in their long-standing collaboration

Port of Norrköping and Hitachi Energy are now taking the next step in their long-standing collaboration. With the construction of a new storage terminal area at the port, new opportunities are being created for handling heavy transport operations. The investment, totaling SEK 51 million, has been approved by the Norrköping Municipal Executive Board and demonstrates how cooperation between the municipality, industry, and the port continues to drive development forward.

For several decades, Hitachi Energy has chosen Port of Norrköping as the shipping point for its transformers, and the partnership has grown stronger alongside increasing order volumes and expanding exports. To meet future demands, Port of Norrköping recently completed a new quay at Pampushamnen on Händelö, specifically designed for heavy cargo and project shipments.

The new terminal area will enable more efficient and integrated handling of Hitachi Energy’s heavy transport operations within the port. A new rail connection into the terminal area will allow cargo to be unloaded directly on site. The marshalling area will become an important part of the logistics chain and will be crucial for ensuring smooth transportation as volumes continue to grow. Construction is already underway and is expected to be completed during the second half of 2027.

The Norrköping Municipal Executive Board has approved the investment, which is an important part of the city’s ambition to create a robust and future-proof infrastructure for business and industry.

“Hitachi Energy has been an important partner for Norrköping for a long time. The fact that we are now taking another step forward together demonstrates the municipality’s ability to create sustainable solutions and favorable conditions for both established and new businesses,” says Olle Vikmång, Chair of the Municipal Executive Board.

The project is financed through a joint agreement under which Hitachi Energy covers the investment cost through an annual lease, while Port of Norrköping continues to be entrusted with handling the heavy project cargo. Through their combined efforts, the companies are strengthening both the region and Swedish export industry.
