Winter navigation: yellow warning for ice issued

2024-01-02

Winter navigation: The warning came into effect at 04:00 on New Year’s Day morning and remains in place until further notice. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) issued a yellow warning on New Year’s Day in a stretch over Bråviken and the Östergötland archipelago up to the Stockholm archipelago. The warning in the area pertains to moderate to severe icing at sea. On its website, SMHI explains that sea icing involves seawater freezing onto ships. This can result in the accumulation of so much ice that the ship’s weight increases by hundreds of tons. The weight gain can compromise the ship’s stability and potentially lead to capsizing in the worst-case scenario. Additionally, the ability to steer the boat can be limited. The warning came into effect at 04:00 on New Year’s Day morning and remains in place until further notice.
