Port of Norrköping is directly affected by the ongoing negative trend within the Swedish forest industry.
The company’s overall assessment is that the changed market situation in the region’s forest industry is not temporary.
Over the past few months, several of the company’s major customers in the forest industry have announced cost-saving programs to reduce their operations, leading to lower volumes and revenues for the port. The negative volume development within the segment means that Port of Norrköping needs to adapt its organization to meet the new conditions. As part of this process, the company has today issued a notice of potential redundancies that may affect 11 employees. At the same time, negotiations under the Co-Determination Act (MBL) will begin to discuss staffing needs and the future organization.
“This is one of the most difficult decisions we can make as an employer. But in order to remain competitive, we must adapt to secure our long-term strength,” says Henrik Åkerström, CEO of Port of Norrköping.
The company plans to have a new organization in place at the beginning of next year. At the same time, management emphasizes the importance of allowing the process the time it requires.
“Our employees are the heart of our operations, and issuing redundancy notices is always a last resort. We are fully aware that this affects our employees deeply. Therefore, we will carry out the process in a responsible manner,” concludes Henrik.
